How did you become an artist?

As a kid I didn't know much about art, but I knew I enjoyed science and drawing. So I went and studied architecture in Strasbourg (France), for it mixed both science and art. But then, after graduation I was curious to try and create a short animation, just for fun, with a friend of mine. It changed everything for me. It made me realize that this could actually be a job. I loved it so much that I looked into changing paths and learning animation. I entered a 2 year animation course at La Poudrière in Valence (France).

Since then I never looked back. I was doing a lot of 3D at first but eventually I decided to focus on 2D animation. Little by little I also started doing illustrations and eventually became an illustrator as well. I have worked most of my career as a freelancer, and I love being independent. I got to work on films, advertising, games, music videos, etc, and for clients such as Katy Perry, Marvel, BBC, Netflix, Capcom, etc.

Where do you get inspiration?

I am a child of the 80s 😎, so Japanese Anime, as well as French and American comics, had a huge influence on me. My favourite animated movies are Ghost in the Shell directed by Mamoru Oshii from a manga by Masamune Shirow, and Princess Mononoke from Ghibli, directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

This said I am grateful for social media and how they allowed me to discover so many incredible artists. I also enjoy simply drawing a lot of fan art from my favourite shows and games. It's also fun and engaging for my followers, and it often helped me get real work.

What’s your hardware setup?

I have used many different brands through the years but at the moment I enjoy a powerful workstation laptop, the HP ZBook Studio x360 💻. With that I have a large Lenovo curved screen, and a 19 inch tablet from HUION. I very much enjoy the 19inch format which other brands don't do.

What do you like best about Clip Studio Paint?

I love the fact that it is very complete and familiar to use right from the start. But my preference is the timeline. It's definitely one of the best animation software out there for the fact that the user interface is actually very user friendly. ✨

How long does it take you to make a single illustration?

It depends on the subject and the content but typically it's a day of work, often spread out over two or three days. Maybe just an hour to sketch out an idea. Then a few hours for refining and cleaning up the lines, and a few more hours for colouring and shading.

How has Clip Studio Paint improved your workflow?

When it comes to animation, it's a time saver. I have used so many other apps out there, and I find that most of them are outdated and clunky, or just incomplete. The perfect app doesn't exist but CSP's timeline has my vote. 👍
