How did you become an artist?
ES Desde que era una niña pequeña siempre me ha gustada crear, pintar y dibujar. Recuerdo una vez que mi madre me encontró rayando las paredes con mis crayones. Me permitió continuar para luego limpiar la pared con un paño… no me reprendió solo me permitió crear. Mis padres jugaron una papel fundamental en mi vida, siempre me apoyaron a explorar mis pasiones. Mi madre me puso en clase de pintura, me compraban siempre los materiales que quería y también era mi mayor critica (en el buen sentido) Recuerdo que siempre le llevaba mis dibujos y ella siempre me deci que podia corregir. Mi padre (un señor tradicional y amante de los números) me compartía paginas llenas de tutoriales de dibujo y hasta me compró mi primer caballete. Gracias a ese apoyo incondicional, decidí estudiar ilustración. Desde pequeña siempre me fascinó las ilustraciones en los libros que leí.. era mi parte favorita. Mi padre nos cultivó ese amor por la lectura cuando nos llevaba a la librería a leer todas las tardes.
Me gradué de Ilustración en el 2020 (justo cuando la pandemia inicio) Comencé trabajando como diseñadora gráfica hasta que perdí mi trabajo. En junio del 2020, decidí finalmente dar ese paso y trabajar como ilustradora. Comencé trabajando con Unicef Latam y el Ministerio de Educación ilustrando para el material didáctico que se usaron en las escuelas ese ano y desde ahi seguí trabajando como ilustradora freelancer en diferentes proyectos. A finales del 2024 conseguí representación con la agencia de ilustración Advocate y desde ahí he seguido mi camino de ilustradora haciendo todo tipo de trabajos como libros infantiles, materiales didáctico hasta juegos de mesa… Ha sido toda una aventura ver donde me ha llevado y todo comenzó con una niña rayando las paredes de su casa.
ENG Ever since I was a little girl, I've always loved creating, painting, and drawing.I remember once my mother caught me scribbling on the walls with my crayons. She let me continue and then cleaned the wall with a cloth… she didn't scold me, she just allowed me to create. My parents played a fundamental role in my life; they always supported me in exploring my passions. My mother enrolled me in painting classes, always bought me the materials I wanted, and was also my biggest critic (in a good way). I remember always bringing her my drawings, and she always told me what changes I should make. My father (a traditional man and a lover of numbers) shared pages full of drawing tutorials with me and even bought me my first easel. Thanks to that unconditional support, I decided to study illustration. From a young age, I was always fascinated by the illustrations in the books I read. My father cultivated that love of reading in us when he took us to the bookstore to read every afternoon. I graduated with a degree in Illustration in 2020 (right when the pandemic started).I began working as a graphic designer until I lost my job. In June 2020, I finally decided to take a leap of faith and work as an illustrator. I started working withUNICEF Latin America and the Dominican Ministry of Education, illustrating educational materials used in schools that year, and from there I continued working as a freelance illustrator on various projects. At the end of 2024, I secured representation with the illustration agency Advocate, and since then I've continued my journey as an illustrator, creating all kinds of work, from children's books and educational materials to board games. It's been quite an adventure to see where it's led me, and it all started with a little girl scribbling on the walls of her house.
Where do you get inspiration?
ES De todos los lugares! Como ilustradora, tengo una misión personal que es representar lo invisible, darle visibilidad a esas comunidades olvidadas, mostrar todo tipo de personas y lugares. Soy una ilustradora afro latina y al crecer nunca vi personajes como yo y por eso tomé esa decisión para que ningún niño pase por lo mismo que yo viví. Hay varios ilustradores que son mis favoritos y puedes ver como el arte de ellos me ha inspirado: Beatrix potter, David Sierra, Beatrice Blue y Anooshad Syed.
ENG From all over! As an illustrator, I have a personal mission: to represent the invisible, to give visibility to forgotten communities, and to showcase all kinds of people and places. I'm an Afro-Latina illustrator, and growing up, I never saw characters like myself. That's why I made this decision, so that no child has to go through what I experienced. There are several illustrators who are among my favorites, and you can see how their art has inspired me: Beatrix Potter, David Sierra, Beatrice Blue, and Anooshad Syed.
What’s your hardware setup?
ES Casi la mayoría del tiempo dibujo en mi PC con la Huion Kamvas pro 24 4k y cuando dibujo fuera de mi casa, utilizo mi iPad pro m5 que justo compre hace unas semanas luego de usar un Ipad pro M1 como por 5 años.
ENG I mostly draw on my PC with the Huion Kamvas pro 24 4k and when I draw outside my house, I use my iPad pro m5 which I just bought a few weeks ago after using an iPad pro M1 for about 5 years.
What do you like best about Clip Studio Paint?
ES Por donde empezar… Comencé a usar CSP Pro en el 2020 porque lo gane en un concurso. Ame como el programa fue diseñado con el artista en mente. Son cositas pequeñas que se nota la atención al detalle como el menu que puedes personalizar al usar la herramienta de selección, las cantidad enorme de recursos y pinceles creados por la misma comunidad, ver cuando tiempo le invertí a una ilustración, filtro para remover el fondo de tus bocetos y muchas cosas mas.Desde el 2025 me cambie a la version EX y amo poder manejar un archivo multi-página, como ilustradora de libros infantiles lo agradezco grandemente. Y lo mas importante, la comunidad. Clip Studio ha creado un espacio donde fomenta la creación de arte, tutoriales, recursos y consejos. Se nota que aman a la comunidad y están dispuestos a ayudarnos a crecer mas.
ENG Where to begin… I started using Clip Studio Pro in 2020 because I won it in a contest. I loved how the program was designed with the artist in mind. It's the little things that show attention to detail, like the customizable menu when using the selection tool, the huge number of resources and brushes created by the community, the ability to see how much time I've invested in an illustration, the filter to remove the background from your sketches, and much more. Since 2025,I've been using the EX version, and I love being able to manage a multi-page file.As a children's book illustrator, I greatly appreciate this. And most importantly, the community. Clip Studio Paint has created a space that fosters art creation, tutorials, resources, and advice. It's clear they love the community and are willing to help us grow.
How long does it take you to make a single illustration?
ES Amo que Clip Studio Paint tiene integrado en el mismo programa una contador lo cual me ayuda mucho a calcular lo que me puedo durar ilustrando un cuento. Depende mucho del tipo de ilustración que vaya a pintar. Hay veces que puedo tardar 2horas si es una ilustración tipo viñeta pero si hablamos de una portada o ilustración doble pagina, puedo tardar entre 8 a 10 horas. La ilustración que mas tiempo dure pintando fue una que gano el 3er lugar en una de las competencias de dibujo que organiza Clip Studio Paint donde tarde casi 20 horas en terminarla y sigue siendo una de mis favoritas.
ENG I love that Clip Studio Paint has a built-in timer, which really helps me estimate how long it will take me to illustrate a story. It depends a lot on the typeof illustration I'm painting. Sometimes it can take me 2 hours for a single-panel illustration, but if it's a cover or a double-page spread, it can take me between 8 and 10 hours. The illustration that took me the longest to paint was one that won 3rd place in a drawing competition organized by Clip Studio Paint. It took me almost 20 hours to finish, and it's still one of my favorites.
How has Clip Studio Paint improved your workflow?
ES Yo tenia la idea que Clip Studio Paint era solo para la creación de comics así que cuando empece a usarlo en el 2020 no le tenia mucha fe. A lo largo de ese mismo año vilo equivocada que estaba. En la version EX, puedes tener archivos multi-páginas que los uso para ilustrar los cuentos infantiles. Cuando me toca trabajar fuera de la casa, me gusta que el trabajo lo subo a la nube y en la app de CSP simplemente abro el archivo y sigo trabajando.
ENG A lot! I had the idea that Clip Studio Paint was only for creating comics and mangas, so when I started using it in 2020, I didn't have much faith in it. Throughout that same year, I realized how wrong I was. In the EX version, you can have multi-page files, which I use to illustrate children's stories. When I have to work away from home, I like to upload my work to the cloud, and in the CSP app, I simply open the file and continue working.
