How did you become an artist?
I’ve always been keen on art ever since I was a child, but it was really more of a hobby back then. I’d be inspired by Sailormoon and other classic animes from the ‘90s and just while away the time drawing. But sometime around University, I started taking a more keen interest in it while studying something totally unrelated to art later on. I pivoted into becoming a full time artist for a game development studio after graduation, and that was where I really started to develop my artistic abilities, a process which has continued growing to the present day!
Where do you get inspiration?
A lot of my inspiration comes from books and the internet – photos, videos, sometimes even podcasts, and especially other artists who often kickstart the ideas for my next project! It also really helps to have music on in the background – there’s something for every mood and so with many sources of music you’re really spoilt for choice!
What’s your hardware setup?
I use an Apple iPad Pro 12.9” with an Apple Pencil.
What do you like best about Clip Studio Paint?
I like how I have access to a huge variety of dierent assets in stores such as brushes, 3D model templates for posing, filters and other materials.
Another thing is that my iPad is beefy enough to make full use of layers in Clip Studio Paint. Having this level of control over both my brush and layers makes work quick and accurate! And finally, I love the Time lapse video feature. I can share my process so much more easily with others!
How long does it take you to make a single illustration?
A rough sketch with blocked in shading can take 30-45 minutes to draft. Once the idea is locked in, a full-detail drawing with colours and simple background takes about 2-3 days.
How has Clip Studio Paint improved your workflow?
Compared to other paint programs available for my iPad, Clip Studio Paint is closer to how I worked with Adobe Photoshop including many of the same functions and quality-of-life features. I like being able to quickly swap between my many brush toolbars, and organizing my layers so they’re easy to manage.
I also really appreciate the time lapse recording function, as it saves me the trouble of manually capturing my process on stream and having to process it afterwards which is a huge time saver!
Where can we follow your work?
Compared to other paint programs available for my iPad, Clip Studio Paint is I post all my updates on Instagram and Threads @chwys_art, a little less on Twitter @chwys_art. I keep up to date with my WIPs, time-lapses and finished pieces there!
